about

Taglish is an exploration of a vector of Filipino-American life: the lives and personalities that comprise the Defensor-Evangelista family, told through the perspective of an American born Filipino. I have not attempted to write the music as a kind of pinoy-ified jazz; rather, I am using my ideas, developed with a large debt to afrological and Western musical concepts, to talk about “Filipinoness” in the abstract. This is “Taglish”: English is my language, but I mean Filipino things.

I hope that the personality and intimacy of this music successfully communicate that accounting for subjective realities is vital toward understanding what it means to be a part of any group--Americans, Filipinos, etc. We can learn things about ourselves by opening our minds to the strangers in the mirror.

Grex (the band) explores the meeting point between fun, delightfully strange psychedelic pop/rock and the dark outer reaches of noise and free jazz. ... more
